Regional Sport & Physical Activity Coordinators- NORTHEAST & FRASER Regions only
The overarching mission of the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council (Partners Council) is to improve the health outcomes of Aboriginal people across British Columbia by supporting and encouraging physically active communities and by expanding access to sports and recreation opportunities. The Partners Council has established six regions across BC inclusive of the Northwest, Northeast, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver Coastal, and Vancouver Island. This structure brings together community sport, recreation, physical activity and health leaders from within each Region to establish committees, set priorities and create annual plans for advancing sport, recreation and physical activity in their area.

In 2008, at a historical gathering of Aboriginal leaders, a five-pillar sport, recreation and physical activity framework was presented and endorsed as a means of improving the health of First Nations, Métis, and off-reserve Aboriginal peoples in BC. The group that developed and presented the framework, which included the First Nations Health Council, Métis Nation BC, and the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, formalized their partnership by creating the Aboriginal Sports, Recreation Physical Activity Partners Council (Partners Council). With the endorsement of the Pillar Framework by the First Nations, Métis and Friendship Centres leadership, the Partners Council proceeded to develop a comprehensive plan, now known as the Aboriginal Sports, Recreation and Physical Activity Strategy (BC). The long-term Strategy is designed to increase access and participation in sports, recreation, and physical activity for Aboriginal people across BC.

2011 Equipment Grant Program (NEW)
The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council (Partners Council) is launching a regionally based Equipment Grant Program that allows First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities and Aboriginal Friendships Centres across British Columbia to apply for funds to purchase sport, recreation and/or physical activity equipment. The equipment will be used by communities/organizations to promote healthy active lifestyles by reducing barriers and increasing access to sport, recreation and physical activity programs for the entire community – from children to elders.
The Equipment Grant Program will be delivered through each of the Partner Council’s six Regional Committees, inclusive of the Northwest, Northeast, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver Coastal and Vancouver Island. The Regional Committees will be responsible for evaluating the applications submitted by communities/organizations from within their region and awarding the grants.
Guidelines for the 2011 Equipment Grant Program are as follows:
Eligibility
All First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities and Friendship Centres will be eligible to apply within their region. In addition, some provincial not-for-profit organizations that deliver Aboriginal health promotion programs may be eligible to receive a grant.
