Job Summary
Aboriginal Supported Child Development (ASCD) programs are available to support aboriginal families and their children by providing culturally safe services and supports that honor the whole child in the context of their family, community and culture. ASCD’s purpose is to enable children who require extra supports to be included in child care settings, preschool, before/after school and community settings.
The Provincial Advisor contributes to the overall coordination, training, resources, advocacy and support for ASCD programs and services to Aboriginal children and families in British Columbia. The Provincial Advisor is the key point of contact and provides expert advice, consultation, support, information, resources, coordination and leadership for Aboriginal Supported Child Development Programs and ASCD staff across the province. The Provincial Advisor provides provincial leadership around policy review and development that contributes to holistic and culturally guided practices supporting Aboriginal Children and Youth with extra support needs to help advance their growth, development, functioning and Inclusion in their homes and community.
We are seeking someone who…
- Is well familiar with the work of inclusion, supports for children with special needs, and childcare for Indigenous families
- Wishes to contribute their considerable advocacy and community development skills to enhancing inclusive and culturally safe spaces for families across the province
- Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a network, while also comfortable working as part of a small, dispersed team
- Is excited to contribute their direct service experience in support of service providers
Qualifications
- A relevant bachelor’s degree preferably; Early Child Development (ECED), Early Child Education (ECE), Social Work (SW), Child & Youth Care (CYC).
- Minimum of five years’ experience working with children and youth with support needs and their families. (Would consider; ECE with IDP/SCD Certificate or IDP/SCD Diploma and five years of experience working with children and families with support needs.)
- Experience and Knowledge in the field of Early Childhood Development including Early Childhood Education focusing on extra support needs.
- Professional written and oral communication skills and excellent community facilitation experience working Indigenous People; First Nations, and Metis communities and Aboriginal organizations and families.
- Demonstrated experience in administration and leadership including understanding budgets.
- Knowledge of childcare policies and programs in B.C. particularly as it relates to Aboriginal programs and services.
- Mature individual who demonstrates confidence, assertiveness, effective interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work as a team and in partnership with other programs and resources.
- Demonstrates the ability to provide direct program service delivery experiences and knowledge of culturally appropriate family centred practice, early intervention, child development and community-based programs.
Employment Conditions
- The selected individual must have a stable internet connection and telephone/cell phone to work from home. IT services and laptops will be supplied.
- The workweek is 28 hours; some overtime and frequent travel are required for this position. Must live within one hour of a regional airport.
- Must be able to provide a clear, current criminal record check.
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be a requirement for the successful candidate.
- A valid BC Driver’s licence is required.
The compensation package includes…
- Three weeks paid vacation (plus additional time off during office closure at the end of December).

- $72,000-$90,000 starting salary based on experience.
- RRSP matching of up to 8% of annual salary to a max of $8,000 per year.
