Job Summary

Located within the territory of WSÁNEĆ (Saanich), Lkwungen (Songhees) and Wyomilth (Esquimalt) peoples, the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) is the umbrella association for the 25 Friendship Centres throughout the Province of British Columbia. The BCAAFC collaboratively works to promote and deliver accessible programs and services that target urban Indigenous peoples and that support their vision of health and wellness.

We are seeking a qualified individual to provide staff support to the BCAAFC’s Provincial Indigenous Youth Council (PIYC). By supporting PIYC the position helps to ensure that youth voice remains integral to the operations and focus of the BCAAFC.

We are seeking someone who…

  • Has strong leadership and organizational skills to help ensure our council operates smoothly.
  • Clear, effective, and thoughtful verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to adapt communication style and method to meet the needs of various stakeholders: youth, colleagues, caregivers, funders, elders, general public.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and giving presentations to membership, communities, general public, on the work of PIYC.
  • Strong PC software skills including experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams and Excel).
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills to ensure PIYC documentation and records are updated and maintained.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or related schooling in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Youth Development, Community Development, Education, and at least 2 years experience working with youth
  • Required experience working with Indigenous community and service organizations, with a strong understanding of the importance of local protocols
  • Experience working on youth-related projects and/or in a youth setting
  • Must be able to provide clear, current criminal record check including vulnerable sector check.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada; and legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and Regulations.

Employment Conditions

  • This is a work-from-home position.
  • The selected individual and must have a stable internet connection and telephone/cell-phone to work from home. IT services and a laptop will be supplied.
  • This position requires the ability to travel (mostly in BC) and work overtime for special events, conferences, and Gathering Our Voices. Overtime is compensated as per the BC Labour Code requirements.
  • This position requires mandatory travel to the annual Gathering Our Voices youth conference in March.
  • This position requires bi-weekly, virtual, check-in meetings with the BCAAFC Manager of Member Services, to whom this position reports.

Compensation

  • $30.00/hour
