This self-assessment survey is for training purposes only. BCAAFC has permission to use and adapt this tool from the San'yas ICS Training Program. The purpose of the strategy is to create safe and equitable healthcare experiences for Indigenous patients and families, as well as safer workplaces for Indigenous employees. The results of this survey will help improve services for Indigenous people throughout the region.

As employees, volunteers, visiting scholars, and privileged physicians, you are invited by the INSERT INVITATION SOURCE to complete this survey. Questions about your information and this survey may be directed to the INSERT CONTACT PERSON AND CONTACT LINK. Because this survey collects responses anonymously and cannot link them back to you, it will not be possible to withdraw your consent after you participate.

You do not have to participate. There will be no penalties if you do not want to participate. It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete the survey.

We do not intend to identify you. For open ended responses, please do not share information that might identify you or someone else. Any personally identifiable information that is provided in your responses to open-ended questions will be deleted when the results of the survey are compiled. When survey results are reported, presented, or published we will not include any data that could identify you.

Only the INSERT SPECIFIC TEAM and their technical support team will access survey responses. The INSERT NAME OF PROJECT TEAM will run the survey and analyze the results. Survey data will be stored in the INSERT PROJECT database electronically for seven years. You will not be provided with survey results.

Understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety

Let’s start with the idea of Indigenous cultural safety. This concept may be somewhat unfamiliar to you or perhaps you know it well.

The term Indigenous refers to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, whether they are staff or clients in your workplace.

Cultural Safety for Indigenous people means that health care services are delivered with critical knowledge, awareness, and skills. Knowledge refers to our understanding of Canada's colonial past and its impact on Indigenous people today. Awareness means we recognize how our own assumptions and attitudes influence our interactions with Indigenous people. Finally, skill refers to our ability to deliver services respectfully to Indigenous people and respond to racism against them in the workplace. All of these are required for culturally safe delivery of services to Indigenous people.

The following questions are about your understanding of Indigenous Cultural Safety.

Awareness and Values

This section is about awareness and values. Here, we ask about how you see yourself in relation to Indigenous people, and what you think is important when providing services to them. The first questions are about your awareness.

Knowledge and Understanding

This section is about your understanding of factors that influence the well-being of Indigenous people. The first question focuses on the negative impact of some aspects of colonization and settlement (see below). Following this, we ask about the positive impact of factors such as Indigenous languages and cultural practices. In each question, we are asking about your understanding of the impact of the item on Indigenous people--negative for some items, positive for others. This section covers many issues; your knowledge of these may vary from item to item.

Negative Impact

The questions below are about historical and current aspects of colonization in Canada. Policies of the past such as residential schools, as well as ongoing issues, such as the removal of Indigenous children from their communities, are included here.

Positive Impact

In contrast to the previous questions, these focuses on positive impacts. Here, we ask about factors that promote the health and well-being of Indigenous people. These include, for example, Cultural practices as well as connections to Indigenous lands.

Skills and Abilities 

This section is about applying what you know about racism against Indigenous people in your workplace. Racism can take many forms. It can be quite obvious, such as verbal or physical violence, or it can be more subtle and difficult to recognize. It includes negative beliefs (stereotypes), attitudes (prejudice), and actions (discrimination). We are interested in how confident you are in your skill in recognizing and responding to racism against Indigenous people at work.

There may be many reasons for not taking action to prevent or address racism against Indigenous people in your workplace. Some reasons may be personal; others may be related to your work environment.

Your Workplace and Organization

This section has two parts: your workplace and your organization. The first part is about your workplace. Think about the people you work with most often when answering these questions.

The next questions are about your organization. Consider the PHSA program or service you are part of (e.g. BC Cancer Agency, BC Centre for Disease Control, etc.).
