Training Registration

DAFGP Cultural Safety Training

The Doulas for Aboriginal Families Grant Program (DAFGP) provides grants that help increase access to full-spectrum doula services for Indigenous families residing in B.C. (both on and off reserve).
As part of the program, all non-Indigenous doulas are required to complete Cultural Safety Training as part of the registration process. However, if you are interested in cultural safety training that is specific to birth work, it is available for anyone to take.
This training is delivered online and takes approximately 2–3 hours to complete. All proceeds from registration are reinvested directly into the DAFGP grants that support Indigenous families.
I was deeply moved by this training, really enjoyed the videos and found myself wanting more education on traditional Indigenous birth practices! Thank you for creating this tool. I feel it is so valuable and will positively impact my care towards Indigenous families.

About the Training

Each Module video is about 15-minutes long. There are three Training Reflection Questions to answer per Module. The entire training is delivered online, including completion of the Training Reflection Questions, may take 2-3 hours to complete. Participants must submit their answers to the Training Reflection Questions in order to complete the DAFGP cultural safety training program.

Modules

This module provides a foundational overview of the history and context of birth in an Indigenous context. This includes an overview of Indigenous birthing practices, how these practices have been impacted by colonization, and racism in the healthcare setting.

This module provides an introduction to the concept of cultural safety and trauma
informed care, and how they relate to your role as a doula for Indigenous families.
The module discusses strategies for providing culturally safe and trauma-informed
care, and what this may look like in practice.

This module delves deeper into the concept of cultural safety to explore additional
tools to promote culturally-safe care, including: critical reflexivity, communication and relationship building, and different tools for establishing culturally-safe care for care recipients.

This module brings together learning and reflections from Modules 1-3 to explore
how they can be put into practice through three phases of doula support: preparing
for labour, during labour, and after labour.
